Preacher's Pulpit Series #10
Comrades, greetings in the name
of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. At
this time of year we talk a lot about freedom.
We toss around words like freedom, liberty, justice, human rights, ect. These words are easy to say and talk about
but how many of us know the price that has to be paid to obtain what these
words so boldly proclaim? Those of you
who have served in the military probably know more than others the high cost
that is paid for these words while the rest of the world sits around and just
talks about them. My hat is off to you
who serve or have served. May God keep
you safe and richly bless you and your families for all the sacrifices you have
made.
Jesus
said in Luke 4:18, “The Spirit
of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the
poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the
captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” Here
Jesus has made a bold statement. The
Greek word for liberty is “aphesis” and means release from bondage or
imprisonment. The word for bruised is
“thrauo” and it means broken in pieces or shattered. To me when you apply the translations to
these words this verse takes on a much more stronger meaning. Jesus has come to release us from our
imprisonment to sin that has shattered our lives! Now that is true freedom! Jesus laid down his life so that we can be
free in the spirit just as our service men present and past have laid down
their lives so that we can be free in the physical.
So, as we think about freedom over the summer let us not
forget the servicemen who gave us this freedom at so high a cost and let us not
forget Jesus who also gave his life for us that we may have freedom from
sin. I close with one last quote from
John 8:32-36, “32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free . 33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou *, Ye
shall be made free? 34
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you *, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35
And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth forever. 36
If the Son therefore shall make you free , ye shall be free indeed.”
May
the Lord bless you and keep you in his hands till we meet again.
